Gum Care | Los Gatos Family Dentistry
Why might you need our professional gum care services in Los Gatos?
Gum disease, or periodontitis, is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. Caused by a buildup of bacteria and plaque below the gum line, gum disease eventually leads to swelling, tenderness, bleeding, bad breath, tooth mobility, bone loss, and tooth loss over time. Gum disease has even been connected to other kinds of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and pre-term birth.
So while it might not be the first thing you think about when you consider a trip to the dentist, our Los Gatos gum care services are important for a variety of reasons!
Los Gatos Gum Care: Scaling and Root Planing
Dr. Phan offers special care for gum disease through deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. When bacteria and plaque collect below the gum line, they can cause bone loss and eventually tooth loss. With a deep cleaning procedure, Dr. Phan will remove bacteria and plaque from the pockets below your gum line allowing your gums to reattach and stabilize your teeth to halt further bone loss.
Some of the products we use in our Los Gatos gum care procedures include:
- Oraquix: The needle-free, liquid anesthetic we can apply when performing a deep cleaning procedure in order to make the patient more comfortable.
- Arestin: An antibiotic powder that is placed in the gum pocket during or after a deep cleaning procedure. It is slowly released over 10 days and improves pocket depths more than deep cleaning alone.
- Dyclonine: This is a rinse that patients who have sensitive gums and teeth can use during their regular cleaning appointment to numb the gums. It wears off by the end of the appointment.
If you have gum disease, or a history of gum disease, you may require more frequent dental cleanings to closely monitor the condition of your gums and prevent relapse. Inquire today about our Los Gatos gum care program and what we do to help you preserve your teeth for life.
